I've never had a good version of this soup. I make it from time to time for my sister's 90 something year old father-in-law, though, because he loves the stuff. I've made a pretty good version of a roasted broccoli soup/bisque that works. Totally different flavor.

I like this soup a few times a year with crawfish during corn and crawfish season with a corn stock from the cleaned ears. It's really good when the corn is fresh. I sometimes make it in the winter with corn and andouille. Decent use of corn that's not that fresh and the andouille adds a lot of flavor. I like a cup in the winter with a grilled cheese sandwich.

I make a plain version of this that I keep in the freezer for days when I'm feeling puny. I can add whatever I feel up to at the time. That's the only time I eat it, though, and it's pureed not the chunky style which I detest.

I also keep beef vegetable soup in the freezer for the same reason, though I like it even when I'm not feeling puny. I love soups, though. I could eat a soup of some sort every day.
