That would make more sense if he caught the ball on the way down. He timed the jump perfectly. He wouldn't have caught the ball running underneath it

That's not at all how it works. Now could he have taken a deeper angle so he didn't have to jump? Maybe, maybe not, but in no way does he make that catch without jumping.

Or he just could have taken a better route to the ball and diving would be an afterthought anyway.
