eta: I have a custom American Strat, a custom American tele, and a "custom" Les Paul studio. I'd keep the Tele for blues/country, the Les Paul for fuller rock tones (57 classics), and the Strat for a combo of blues and classic rock. Keep in mind though that your guitar is only going to sound as good as your amp.
Amp is a Line 6 Spider Valve Mk II combination amp.

The lower end SG's are pretty crappy, in that price range the Mexican made Strat or tele is the way to go. A USA made SG is really not that expensive if you want to save a little more and get one of them. But in the 400-500 dollar range the Mexican fenders are what I would get.
It's true that a guitar will only sound as good as your amp, but a cheap crappy guitar will play like a cheap crappy guitar even if it's hooked up to a Marshall stack.
