Quin Hillyer summarizes the impact of the privatization of the charity system in a recent column LINK

quote:

So much for the dire warnings of liberal politicians like state Rep. John Bel Edwards, who ludicrously claimed that what he wrongly described as the feds’ “unequivocal” rejection of the lease arrangement would mean — quite definitively — that “Louisiana’s citizens will lose up to $500 million in federal health care funding.”

First, the budget numbers: From what originally was budgeted for $1.1 billion for the former charity hospitals in the fiscal year that ended June 30, the state spent $52 million less than anticipated. That’s a significant savings (about 5 percent), which provides a nice cushion for the new fiscal year.

Then there’s the improvement in services. The administration notes that private management has opened new urgent care centers in north Baton Rouge and in Lake Charles; a new orthopedic clinic and breast health clinic in Lake Charles; and an additional cardiologist, urologist and family health physician in Houma, along with two new digital mammogram units. In Shreveport and Monroe, MRI appointment times have been cut from more than 60 days all the way down to one to two days, while the total clinic backlog has been reduced from 12,000 patients to 1,800.

Newspapers across the state have noticed, with glowing news stories about specific service improvements appearing in the Houma Courier and the Monroe News-Star — the latter also noting the expected opening in November of a new cardiac catheterization lab at University Health Conway.

I agree that privatization of the operating of these hospitals was a good idea and far superior to actual state operation of the hospitals. What I would prefer is that the state sell the hospitals all together and voucher the medicaid services so that all providers can compete for the business. There would be less potential corruptions and even better access to services under such a system.

Nonetheless, the Governor deserves applause from the left and the right for this change. I doubt Rex will applaud given his hatred of any good idea hatched by a republican. People who actually care about health care to the poor and savings to taxpayers should take note of this very positive change in Louisiana health care services for the poor.

(Jindal should not have supported building the largest charity hospital in the history of the state in New Orleans however.)

Good for you IB.

I know you have a hard on about film credits and other things Jindal has done/not done, but glad to see you giving credit where credit is due.

Call em as I see them.

Would I vote for him in a republican primary for any office? No.

Oh BTW. Kudos to Obama for his inaction in the Ukraine and the Gaza. I doubt he made any deliberate decisions but thankfully we are not involved in any of those fights. Would I vote for Obama for anything? No. He is the least capable president ever. He should be impeached but he does deserve some credit for sitting on the sidelines in these wars thus far.

I will say this you are the type of person our citizens should be. You have your ideology but you can recognize great ideas from the other side. If more Americans were like this and not so full of hate for those across the aisle.

Kudos to you.

Jindal has made it far more difficult to provide healthcare to the poor in this state, and deserves no "kudos". What he has done to Louisiana Medicaid is shameful and self-serving.

I am interested to know what it is that he done that is shameful and self serving? Is it the reduction in wait time for services? Is it the greater access to services?

Please tell McLovin are you simply spouting the old democrat line or or do you have facts to back up your claim?

Me a Democrat? Not in a million years. I do however care deeply about the poor- especially children.

Go research who is administering Louisiana's Medicaid dollars these days. You will find they are companies in states like Florida. Ask any pediatrician, or NICU admin, or home health provider what they think about Jindal's new "Bayou Health" admins, and how easy they are to work with. Do a little research and ask why Bobby is changing all 5 of these plans to his "cost savings" model instead of just 3 like he originally planned. Gov Jindal will tell you it's because of greater savings and widespread fraud, but that's bullshite and he knows it.

The truth is, Louisiana had a model Medicaid system to fund services to the over 1 million poor people in the state. Not anymore.

Are you saying the poor are not experiencing greater access and less wait times as Quin stated?

Are you saying there is not medicaid system??

I would rather the hospitals be closed or sold and that privately owned hospitals were reimbursed for care of the poor but that didn't happen. I understand the possibilities of corruption that come with letting government contracts. Lousiana was rather unique among states in the operation of these hospitals and we were one of the worst in delivering services to the poor. Why is it that no state run hospitals are needed in other states to deliver healthcare to the poor??

Please provide a link to any facts that say poor people are not getting more access to healthcare than they were before.
