Yes that perception is wrong. I am 28 and my wife is 24 and we have no kids. There are people our age all around us (between Canal and West End and between Filmore and Harrison). The area is very safe, easy to get downtown. It is also much ummm brighter than the rest of the city. We run a lot so it is really nice running along the lake. Houses are very expensive though, especially new builds, typically $200/sq ft. Lots are decent size but they are typically around $200,000. Best bang for your buck will probably be mid-city but that is a little more dangerous and not as nice as far as homes go. However, you do have better roads.
