Have been hunting with a 1966 vintage Merkel 12 ga sxs for about 25 years. It was chambered for 3" and I used to duck hunt with it but got tired of the punishment and switched to a gas operated Beretta. I still use the SxS to hunt doves and quail with. Bought some 24 gram light loads and it really tames the recoil.
As I understand, bismuth is safe for older shotgun barrels.
