Well in some ways they were like San Francisco but in other ways they were more like the Bible Belt of the American South. There are many modern misconceptions about the Romans and sex.

Yes. It was common for a mentor to have sex with a pupil, but a grown, gay couple would have been seriously frowned upon.

Also, companionship was very important to ancient people, and female companionship was not desired. This is why Alexander gets accused of being gay. He was no gayer than Gilgamesh, who also had a famous companion.
