Not that surprising. If you show people that you respect them, they'll be willing to listen. Then you just have to highlight points of agreement and that will close the deal with some of the people in the audience.
On the other hand, if people think you hate them, they'll tune you out.

Precisely. Talking down to people or patronizing them is a terrible way to try to gain their support.
