When will people learn?
They won't. Because in their mind, it's "save the children and the helpless no matter what".
Think of our societal structure as a very small boat at sea. We have people on our boat, have a vested personal and financial interest in our boat and did all the work to build/buy parts for our boat. We've all managed to ration out food and water proportionate enough for us.
Now we come across some people in the middle of nowhere in the ocean. They start swimming towards us. Their circumstances are dire, horrific and saddening. They have no boat, no raft, no swimming apparatus, nothing.
Now they are grabbing on to our boat and trying to get in. Out of our kindness we feel for them, and allow the three or four we found to get into our boat and share our resources.
We drift further along. Now we come across a group of 5 people. They are in the same circumstances as the first three to four people we picked up earlier. However now, our boat is full and our food/water supply is being disproportionately rationed. We decide to let those 5 people in our boat anyway. Now the food/water rations are screwed to high heaven, the boat is barely moving because of the weight and water is now seeping into the boat because it is vastly over capacity.
Now we come across a group of 10. Everyone on the boat now is frustrated and aggravated. Half of the people on the boat are insisting we let these 10 new people into the boat with us or else they'll die. The other half are refusing to let them into the boat...not because they are heartless, but because they know the boat cannot handle the additional people.
At some point, our tax/welfare system is going to crumble with the way we freely allow undocumented individuals into the country.
I, along with everyone else I would imagine, don't necessarily care that they are here/want to be here. However, find a way to document them, and get them into the system so they can contribute like everyone else.
Simply using a heartstrings argument that "they are humans and deserve the same privileges we have" isn't going to fly with the way our nation is designed. The boat will eventually capsize and not only will the drifters drown, but all of us along with it.
