Lakers dont have a stable coach in place.
Neither do the Knicks (though Melo wasnt leaving NY for a small market, we know this for sure), neither does Boston. Miami's guy probably wont seem as good now that BronBron is gonegone. It's a perfect storm for small market teams to get lucky.
and it didnt happen.. Lance Stephenson isnt a rockstar, but he was sold when he talked to jordan (who he grew up idolizing) and ewing in a meeting in charlotte.

That's their own fault for waiting until mid july. You have even lakers fans questioning if they'll be the new knicks(ie mediocre)

The league is gravitating away from big market teams.

Stephenson is a high quality player though. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that charlotte actually has a pretty good core over the lakers/boston etc.
