Chemically, the active ingredient binds the same receptor as THC. Thus, the comparison/similar name.

The original did at least. JWH-114 or something like that. The problem is once they outlawed that the new formulations they came up with got farther and farther from the original and with new and worse side effects. Another product of making something illegal creating an even worse alternative on the market.
