I said this before I knew of the items in that list. I'd venture to guess that there are other items in the household that could help pay off the settlement. Off the bat I'd switch to two non-smart phones (get money for iphones and lower cell plan at the same time).

I've done similar things in the past when times were tough and there is absolutely NO shame in looking someone right in the eye and telling them that you made the decision to cut back on some luxuries and you're putting your hard earned money into other things. Seems kind of like OP is trying to keep up with the Jones'.

Ok heres an update.

1) I stuck a deal with the collectors that I can afford and will pay it. On the offer letter they sent me, it says payment can be made by certified check or money order. Also they can accept payments on their website.

Q: Is this a legit way to pay them?

2) When I do pay them, what all would be best to include (beside the check/money order). A letter stating the conversation that we had and came to the agreement and this is my payment? (maybe notarized w/ a copy of the offer letter they sent me).

Im going to mail it to them certified letter w/receipt for safe being.

Is there anything else I should include for safe being?
