Right now the Rs look like they are having a civil war, that can't help them on a national election scale. People don't like extremes on either side of the political spectrum.
But the R's are divided, because the mainstream Republicans have drifted so far left that they are almost indistinguishable from the Democrats and they are more concerned with having a seat at the table than they are about being in the head seat.

Can you give me an example of where the Republican party has drifted left? I'm not trolling, I'm serious. I can't really think of anything. The rise of the "Tea Party" was a reaction to Obama, not the Republican establishment.
If this was factual:
