Cafe Adelaide review

I did a TD search and found a couple of threads on this place, but they were locked.
I had a chance to try it after a couple of my foodie friends recommended it to me and I have to say that I went away underwhelmed.
I ordered remoulade ($10), turtle soup, black drum over succotash ($24 lunch combo) and a couple of $.25 martinis. The app was ok with the shrimp being a little bland. No more than two minutes after the app hit my table, another server who wasn't my waiter brought my soup with a bottle of sherry in hand. When he got close to the table he realized that I had just received my app and he started to turn away (awkward). I asked him to leave the soup and that I'd eat them both at the same time. I have to admit that the turtle soup was perhaps the best I've ever had, and how can you beat 25 cent martinis?
That's where the meal fell flat. My black drum arrived and the plate looked colorfully appealing, but my drum wasn't a filet, it was three 2oz pieces of fish, and guess what happens when you cook a two ounce piece of fish...yup...overcooked. This was a stark contrast compared to the succotash because the lima beans were extremely al dente, borderline crunchy. The dish wasn't a disaster enough to send back, but it disappointed.
It's also the sort of dining room that I just can't feel comfortable in. I have no problems dressing up for a good meal, but the place has an overbearing formal stiffness about it from the physical feel of the space to the waitstaff. Don't get me wrong, no one treated me poorly but that's why I like Peche for instance because I can settle in, feel comfortable and have casual conversation with the servers.
Wild White Shrimp Remoulade
crab boiled Gulf shrimp with pickled vegetables, Brussels sprout leaves, baby lettuces, croutons and New Orleans style remoulade
Commander's Turtle Soup
a New Orleans classic, spiked with sherry
Black Skillet Roasted Black Drum
spring succotash of sauteed corn, Creole tomato, pearl barley, and LA soybeans with spicy roasted shellfish butter
They may need to update their online menu because my lunch special is listed as $16

The food there is just average and didn't impress me that much IMO. I found their shrimp and grits to be very bland when I went...I actually had to add salt to it which is something I never do at restaurants.

I've been there one time for lunch. Got a buyer that was pretty good IMO. I enjoyed the shoe string fries as well. Wife had the turtle soup, and it was pretty enjoyable. The $0.25 martini a were very good, and quite potent. I can definitely understand why they limit you to three at lunch.
We had a table of 3 and total bill
Including too was just under $60. I don't think I'll ever actively seek them out, but I wouldn't be opposed to going back.

Went there for breakfast & supper on a recent trip..
Breakfast was delicious, staff was friendly, atmosphere was relaxed & pleasant.
Went back a day later for supper, absolute different experience all together. The atmosphere was very stiff & unwelcoming, staff was rude & (like you) served apps & first course almost at the same time. I had the turtle soup & really didn't like it. I ordered the tuna & was presented 2 small over cooked oddly cut chunks of tuna. Pork chops were ordered by 2 members of the party & they were over cooked & dry. Our waiter was the biggest asshat I've ever encountered at a restaraunt & was rude whenever anyone asked a question about the menu.
Even though breakfast & the breakfast service were good, I won't be back to that place; too many good places to eat in NOLA to subject yourself
To that.

Cafe Adelaide was pretty great when Danny Trace was the chef. Alas, nothing lasts forever.

quote:Yeah, I really didn't understand the purpose of cooking small pieces of fish. The only thing I could think of is that they trim down their dinner size portions to 8oz or whatever and use the trimmings for the lunch special.
