For baby pics a DSLR is overkill. Your phone camera will do fine.
A DSLR won't make a badly-composed picture any better, you have to know how to take good shots with *any* camera first.

My dad taught photography for many years, so I'll get some pointers from him on the way to get good shots. I'm vaguely familiar with aperture and shutter speed and whatnot. I by no means know what I'm doing, but I can learn that. My dad taught mostly in the era of 35mm film, so he's not much of a resource when it comes to newer digital cameras. Plus he's a cheapo, so he'd call me crazy for spending $600 no matter what.
I just made an offer to the guy based on prices I saw for this particular model. I have no idea if there was a better bang for my buck out there. Doesn't really matter now, was just curious.
