You need government intervention to get things done sometimes. It took the gov to end segregation when a lot of businesses were whites only. Just as an example. I have no problem and applaud when gov does something positive for once and bans smoking in public places. Hust as I applaud making it illegal to text and drive or talk on anon hands free phone. I also applaud mandatory helmet laws and seat belt laws front and back. OK so a little off the track
Just as in smoking in casinos, the gas station owners lobby bought off the gov in NJ and no self service.

segregation was existing law, and I would guess that if I went and looked at the books for say, los angeles county, I would find some form of jim crow legislation

I agree. But I don't see smoking on private property as an area that government needs to be involved in.
Yes, you can claim it's a health hazard, but it's not inescapable. If you don't want to eat in a restaurant that allows smoking, then you can go to a restaurant that bans it.
I don't see texting and driving as analogous. I cannot choose who I drive next to or who I share roads with.
I don't see seatbelt/helmet laws as analogous either. My understanding of those laws is that they were created for healthcare expense reasons. Banning a smoker from smoking in a certain area is not going to make him quit smoking altogether. The health risk lies in the act of smoking, not in where you smoke.

you applaud the government telling people what to do when their action or inaction has no effect on anyone else? God I hope you don't come from money, you deserve to live in the utopia you keep voting for.

you mean most times. You think you need laws in place so that you can eat a good meal at a smoke free restaurant...are you fricking retarded? I ask because you seem woefully incapable of doing things for yourself.
