So the Thrawn trilogy is the way to go? Do you guys think it will bridge the gap between episode 7 and the new movies?
You mean between episode 6 and the new movies? Impossible to tell because Lucas said that they do not have to follow the books. Besides, the Thrawn Trilogy took place just a few years after Return of the Jedi while episode 7 will be 30 years after episode 6. It covers the fight against a remaining admiral of the empire, Admiral Thrawn, who is Sherlock Holmes/Tony Stark level brilliant. It is a major step toward the ultimate surrender of the remnants of the empire, but I would not be surprised if none of that is addressed in the next movie. As far as a movie-goer only is likely concerned, the empire fell completely when the emperor died in episode 6.

Lucas has no say so. He is a figure piece.
