I always thought that Notre Dame would have wound up in the Big 10 when the dust settled.
Bad blood exists between Notre Dame and a few B1G teams, namely the Michigan schools. The hierarchy of the Big Ten has always acted as if it was in Notre Dame's best interests to be in the B1G, rather than the other way around.
As a result, the B1G burned their bridges permanently. I once had a big-time ND booster tell me, in all seriousness, that he would rather see Notre Dame STOP PLAYING FOOTBALL than join the B1G. And he stated that many Notre Dame fans feel the same way.
I believed him.

Notre Dame really has more in common with the ACC than the B1G (except for location) anyway, it's a better fit for their non-football sports. Interesting note: With all this realignment, all of the Big 5 conference names are now inaccurate in some way.
Atlantic Coast Conference: Members in Kentucky and Indiana.
Big Ten Conference: Has 14 members.
Big 12 Conference: Has 10 members.
Pacific-12 Conference: Members in Colorado, Utah and Arizona. At least they got the number right.
Southeastern Conference: Member in Missouri.
