the only thing I have seen work is to keep jumping between providers...every time the promotional rate expires, you have to move...
I don't really have the patience for that shite, so I pick a package that will work for me after the promotional rate expires and go with that...

This is true, and it's what we've done for the last 6 years or so. We had Uverse, then Direct, then Dish, then Direct, and are about to switch back to Uverse because of pricing and the SEC Network.
Like you said, it's tiring having to deal with negotiations, promotions, equipment returns and marathon installations, but it does save money. This time around, I'd like to stick with the Uverse bundle and just keep renegotiating every 12 months.
