LINK
There was a thread earlier this week about this kid being diagnosed with Marfran syndrome which effectively ended his hopes of playing pro ball. Silver and the NBA with a very nice gesture giving him his moment tonight.

I get the gesture, but I'd almost rather it not happen.
You basically get the least wanted part of being drafted:
1) making lots of money
2) playing the game you love
3) walking on stage and getting a picture with Adam Silver......

You are retarded. It's a great gesture and he and his family will remember that for ever.

What? It was his dream to be drafted and the NBA made a nice gesture for him and his family.

Yea, really. This guy just found out about the disease (not sure if that is the right word for it). This might help him get over it a little quicker but he's got to be crushed.
Imagine someone telling you:
Hey, pal, in a few months I am going to pay you millions of dollars to do something that you absolutely love doing as your career. Then right before you go to sing your contract, they tell you, "Well, nevermind, you are not fit to do the job. But we will give you this nice plaque to show our appreciation."

Yes disease is the right word
Other than that, you're a complete jackass

It's these guys dreams to be drafted BECAUSE being drafted means you get paid to play a sport and do something you love. They don't want to be drafted jsut to be drafted.

Pretty terrible comparison. Neither him nor the NBA have a choice. He can't play anymore.

Def sucks, but if he didn't want to be part of it he wouldn't have gone. Will still cash out $1 mil from a policy he took out, I read. And supposedly, Scott Drew has already offered him a job at Baylor.
Kid will be fine, really does suck about his condition though.

That's quite the glass-half-empty perspective you've got there. He could have just declined the NBA's offer to do it, so I'd say he wanted the moment.

How is it any different really?

I get that. Not blaming the NBA or him. Just saying this has got to be tough and would probably make me more sad.

I agree. But put yourself in his position. It's not like he knew he wouldn't be able to play in the NBA early on or during his college career. He literally just found out after expecting to get drafted and be in the NBA.

Different because he knows he is physically unable to play in the NBA. So he knows he wont be signing any contract. Like someone said, if he didn't want to do it he wouldn't have gone to the draft.
Tough situation no doubt, but he didn't have to go to the draft. It was obviously something that he wanted to do and his mom looked proud of him so it looked like a good move by the NBA, imo.

He has been remarkably well-grounded about the whole thing. I have a ton of respect for the way he's handled it, and have no doubt that he'll use this personal tragedy to be a force for good.
I think he's handled the whole ordeal with aplomb beyond his years.

And it gave Bill Simmons a chance to get on his soap box about how much more the NBA loves its players than the NFL.

Yeah that was uncalled for. Bill Simmons is such a twat.
