Not sure if this applies but I had a similar issues with my 2008 MBP. For some reason, that motherboard doesn't like to clock down the RAM to the speed it needs to be. I remember wanting to upgrade mine and I tried purchasing some from best buy. The speeds exceeded the recommended specs for that model. I ran into a lot of issues with it and, for a while, ran it with one old RAM chip and one new to get the speeds right. I ended up ordering RAM from macsales.com that was an exact match for the MBP I had. It worked well until I upgraded my computer.
