water will sometimes run a long ways on top of the sheetrock before it finds an opening...sounds like yours found the hole cut out for light fixture...
last time this happened to me, the AC vent line was plugged and it was dripping onto the sheetrock...

There is pan with a level switch that should shut the unit down if the drain line plugs. That doesn't mean it can't fail, just saying.
