Clemente
I once read a book written by a baseball reporter in the '60s (i.e. before Clemente's death). I can assure you that RC was far from universally beloved, at least among the press. He was considered aloof, uncooperative, and sometimes downright unpleasant. His canonization came only after he died.

Clemente was one of the proudest men to ever walk the earth, and never believed he got his due from the US media, at least in part because he was a black Latin player.
