Jimbeaux, go to Gus's in Memphis and you'll see what I mean. Heck, McHardys is better than WM's

It's solid chicken. Memphis and Nashville have joints that are better, but that doesn't take away from Willie Mae's chicken. Check out Crabby Jack's for some really good fried chicken as well.

Please don't spread misinformation.

The Gus's in Memphis is pretty good.

The original, genuine Gus's, in Mason, TN, about 40 miles from downtown Memphis, is the best fried chicken you'll ever have.

They put baking soda in their batter. Helps the batter get dark brown quickly, and the effervescence gives it an appealing lacy texture.

Those who can't detect the soapy/"off" flavor of the baking soda tend to think Willie Mae's is great. Those of us who can aren't so enthusiastic.

The red beans are strange, tasting almost solely of green pepper to me - virtually no pork flavor at all to my palate.

YMMV.

McHardy's is right around the corner and better chicken IMO. But be forewarned, they don't have anywhere to eat inside.

I've been to Willie Maes several times, it's still good. I find they aren't consistent. Twice it was really good and I was actually impressed. Then a couple other times I was a little let down.

Either way I believe it's worth a trip.
