The cornmeal gave it some body, but it's still a bit of a brothy soup rather than a thick soup, which is what I prefer. It gave it a bit of flavor, as well, but not enough to make a huge difference. If you cook the tortilla strips in the soup, you probably don't need it. You can also use masa instead. I added tamales, so I could have done without the cornmeal, but didn't think of that before I decided on the tamales.
