Depending on how many people are in his family parking may be worth it for the convenience.

Unfortunately the Metro lots do fill up pretty early in the morning. Probably the biggest are Vienna and West Falls Church. Protip: The latter also has a UVA and Virginia Tech adult ed facility that has a sizable lot as well, you can probably use that too although it is a fair walk to the station.

Once in town you will be walking everywhere anyway. Capitol Bikeshare will rent bikes to you if you have helmets.

I actually found several lots in the middle of DC that would allow me to reserve a spot for as little as $10-$20.

The big question is would it be doable to travel into the heart of DC around 1-2pm on a weekday?
