I went last month and got to the point around 7 am. It was awful, there was so much grass you couldn't get a bait out. The beach itself was disgusting as well.
We parked on the back side of the fort, walked down to the old pier (still has concrete posts in the water) and went left about 100-200 yards. Tried using several artificial baits with nothing. Caught 9 hard heads on dead shrimp throwing it as far as I could to get out past the grass (didn't work).
Doing it wrong or was it the grass?

Well, its still just fishing. Sometimes they just don't show. That said, the grass could have been the issue, the tide on that morning, maybe it rained the day before, water clarity or something.
I just happen to think late July, early August and early October are the best times for that spot.
