Sunseri Question

Serious question on Vinnie Sunseri. Any word on how he's been in a Saints uniform so far in OTAs? Any way he actually sees the field this year at S in y'all's formations? Or is he special teams/bench only this year?
Curious to see how that project turns out over the next few years.

We are extremely deep at safety. He's going to be on special teams. Maybe step in late in some blowout games but that's about it this year.

I like his potential.
But he won't see the field because of our amazing safety depth.

At best he'll be the 4th safety this year, but that could still get him some snaps. If you're active on game day, Rob will get you involved.
What I'm hoping from him long term is for him to become a ST ace right away and then move into Bush's role after his 2 year contract is up (and we don't retain him, which I don't think we'll be able to by then).

Today at mini camp he was running with the First team, filling in for either Vaccaro or Bush. Looked decent.
But yes I agree, he won't see very much playing time this year unless on special teams.

He is a guy that will be a special teams guy, but I like that he is a very heady football player always by the ball.

He's a coaches son, and a mother-fricking gym rat. And don't you forget it.

You guys are leaving out his high motor. Impossible to overlook

Terrible thread title. Just ask your question in the title, man.

Almost every single pre draft report said this guy will be someone's ST captain eventually.
Will make it as a special teams nightmare for opposing teams.
I have been surprised at the large amount of bama fans here in the panhandle that are giddy the Saints picked this guy up. Something about this guy made the Saints pick a player higher than he was projected which is a rarity under CSP.

Well, some of this is why I posed the question. He really started to turn things up and look like a great S at bama before he got injured. Which is why it was a little surprising he came out this year. So I wanted to see how people were scouting him at OTA's and all since he's recovered and now out there running with the big boys.
I also ask because with some of the injuries/surgeries lately with the starting S for NO if he might see action if those linger? He's a good dude and hope he does well in the NFL.

I understand that but being a coachs' son and a gym rat doesn't get you to Bama and a starting safety spot. He put in the work

He's really got good ball timing and actually made a lot of INTs in college. Good pro potential.

Those are fairly minor injuries though

We didn't draft a player just for special teams IMO. While we are deep at safety, I think we see promise in him. I think he's sees some snaps here and there as the season progresses. There is unfortunately going to be an injury that makes Byrd, KV, or Bush miss time. Just too great of odds of that happening.

With our free agent and draft picks, looks like Rob Ryan is focusing on the thing that will make this defense the best in the league: turnovers.
Byrd is a proven commodity at forcing turnovers from the S position. Sunseri showed that he has potential for that in college. He will get beat if he plays significant time, but if he can force a few turnovers, that is acceptable. One of the reasons I think Patrick Robinson will excel in this defense. He took too many risks as a young corner without good safety help. He did manage to create turnovers though. With a lockdown corner on 1 side and 3 great safeties, I think he'll excel in the Nickle or DB#2 role

Look at how deep Seattle's defense is at each position. Sherman went down, they still dominated. Browner was out, still dominated. KJ Wright was out, relatively shut down jimmy graham/middle of the field.
Only thing we haven't seen is extended periods of time where KC and ET were missing.
Either way, nice to have quality depth and be like seattle rather than atlanta's hot mess.

true dat. It also adds more flexibility if a corner gets injured. KV isn't coming off the field, so if Lewis, Champ, Robinson, or White get injured we could slide him into the slot like last year. The safety depth with KV's skill set gives us added depth to the entire secondary. No Mike McKenzie or McCalister signings this year
