While I don't share your enthusiasm, I believe your assertion is correct, but less so as a galvanizing force for Dems, but more so a further erosion of Republicans' connection with the population.

On television, some people convey to the audience an inviting personality that draws you in and begs you to listen and consider their words. Gowdy is far from fitting that mold. His speech and style are very caustic, as if his every utterance and breath is meant for a singular purpose; confrontation.

In my opinion, the country is becoming exceedingly weary of confrontation and the fracturing of the patriotic spirit into contentious mob-like and bellicose groups constantly fighting in very public ways for every inch of turf instead of forming common ground where the silent majority can stand together in unity and purpose.

Gowdy would give us more of the same vitriol that we experience today, but he would certainly not be a whimpering, tail-tucking, all hat and no cattle, wishy-washy leader like Boehner, either. He tried to play statesman, but instead ending up appearing to have no real backbone or the stomach for an eye-to-eye confrontation. Gowdy, for all his attributes, is the opposite of Boehner. He lives for the battle.

The only problem with Gowdy is that his 'style' encourages further confrontation and more heels digging in to hold position by Democrats. In my opinion, real leadership is needed at this time. The country needs someone who can reach across the aisle and build consensus. Frankly, The country is so fractured right now that I'm not sure there's anyone that could do that. For a time, Newt could do that, and then he lost it. Since then, Congress has lost its way, floundering and devolving into the least respected group of decision makers I believe the country has ever witnessed.

God help us, but this country needs an enema.
