Six-time Olympic gold medalist Amy Van Dyken severs spine in accident

Six-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Amy Van Dyken severed her spine in an all-terrain vehicle accident over the weekend, and told emergency workers she could not move her toes or feel anything touching her legs.
The 46-year-old swimmer, who goes by her married name Van Dyken Rouen, was injured Friday. She was airlifted to a hospital and had surgery to stabilize her spine.
Her husband, former Denver Broncos punter Tom Rouen, told police officers he had changed the throttle mechanism on the ATV from a thumb accelerator to a twist accelerator a few days before the accident, though wasn't sure if it was a factor in the accident. LINK

Was just coming here to post that. Horrible accident. Whether the throttle was a factor or not, her husband must be blaming himself for it.

There is a reason they put the thumb throttle on ATV's, I wouldn't doubt that it was a factor. Terrible news.

That fricking sucks. Fortunately for her it was T11 where the injury took place. She will have full use of her upper extremities, most of her abs, and will breathe normally. Unfortunately if it's complete she won't have use of her legs and will be incontinent. Most young, fit folks do very well with lower spinal cord injuries.
It happens so often and is so tragic. Had a pt one time who had a partial injury sustained at her Bachelorette party from a friend pushing her in the pool. Another young father who lost everything below his shoulders from just diving into a little wave wrong at the beach just like we all routinely do. We truly are fragile creatures.

Horrible injury. Just happened to a good friend of my wife. Guy is 28 years old and is paralyzed from the waist down.
