The game itself is kind of fun, if you're into those types of games. What's not great is Paradox's habit of making massive changes to the base rules of the game every so often / when a new DLC comes around. For instance, the patch that was released at the same time as the newest DLC (Wealth of Nations) led to stacks of rebels cropping up all over the damned map, often more rebels in a given province than there would have been people who lived in that region. Even that wouldn't have been so terrible, but they changed the base strength of rebel units and commanders so those rebels would slaughter whatever forces you could muster. When something like the Protestant Reformation hits and you have 80k roving death stacks of religious rebels, gg.

I'd advise watching some videos of people playing it on Youtube and seeing if you like it before spending the money. shenryyr2, quill18, arumba, sbfmaddjinn are a few people who upload videos of it.

If you do like it, say goodbye to hundreds of hours of your life.
