Does anyone know the reason for such a dangerous and poor design?
I used to work with an old guy that was with DOTD (it was still LDH at that time) when it was designed. There was always a rumor that they aligned it that way so that southbound traffic would have a head-on view of the state capital when heading through the curve. He said that wasn't true, and that alignment was the only way that they could connect the two portions of the freeway, due to existing adjacent properties and the railroad track. I don't know how true that is, but I doubt he would have lied.

I was always told it was due to the railroad track.

Yeah, one of my professors in college who worked on it said that the view of the Capitol was a side benefit that they just tweaked a little bit. The rest had to do with existing infrastructure and making it work within those confines. I don't have a problem with the 50 MPH there. I've seen some bad wrecks there. People and loads going over the walls into oncoming traffic and such.

Now Bluebonnet extension is some BS.
