I used to work in the service industry and it's a kind of an unwritten code that if you worked in the industry you always tip well

Definitely true for me and most people that have been there, but some people take having worked in service as a license to be super nitpicky about how much they tip. My mother is like that at least.

This plays a role. I was also brought up to tip well. My mom, brother, and sister all tip well above average and they never worked service industry. This is kind of out there but we also tip above average because of the stereotype that black people don't tip.
