I lucked out. Put my bag in storage (Departures at terminal C, train is just down the steps) and took the train to the Frankfurt Main Station (hft). The area around the station is pretty sketchy. I wouldn't want to be on those side streets at night. I kept walking further into town towards the shopping areas and finally made it to the area with the water fountains and park. Stumbled upon a festival. The had one street blocked off for 6 blocks. It was nothing but meat, beer, wine and happy drunk people. Surprisingly I heard several American accents there. Free live music as well. Spent 5 hours there. Just back at the airport now. Enjoyed some fine beer and eats.

Fair warning. Keep a euro coin handy or you will have no place to take a piss at the train station.
