Fielding % has been giving mediocre fielders gold gloves for years. Derek Jeter has 4 GGs and most would say he could be responsible for the attention advanced defensive stats gets, because he isn't close to a GG SS.

Whether you agree with advanced stats or not, fielding % is a basic stat, like batting average. It's a good place to start for investigating how well someone hits or fields, but there are many more stats that tell the whole story.

It's like a guy with no power hitting .338 and people saying he's a better hitter than Miggy Cabrera and his .308 avg. There is more to the story. And in the case of fielding %, it doesn't tell us anything about range, arm strength, positioning, error rate etc.



Anyway, as long as Castro is hitting and not totally killing you on defense, then that's fine. But he's average to below league average on defense.

No doubt...it's just a stat.

Which is why I used UZR and ErrR as well in my post.
