From the conversation Robert and Ned have talking about Jon Snows mother, you definitely take away that it was an isolated incident.

And Ned was ashamed of it.

Where as Robert bangs whores on the reg.

Robert and Cersei had the most dysfunctional, destructive marriage in the series. They had ZERO compatibility, and their 'marriage alliance' didn't do much IMO.

When I went back and rewatched season one, I had a different impression.

Yes Ned Stark was ashamed, but not for cheating on Cat, for lying to Robert about the whole thing. It's like Ned, right there in that convo scene wanted to blurt out ' Jon's not my kid! I didn't cheat on Cat!" but he knew if even just one other person knew Jon's true identity, then more people would know, and people (probably Jon) would end up dead.

For how much the show goes on and on about Ned's honor, and how much we see of Ned's honor, ever until the very end, there is no way in my mind that Ned had a kid out of wedlock.

But I don't 'know' anything. So I could be totally wrong. Also, my dad, who's read the books said that ****NOT REALLY SPOILER AT ALL****

Before Cat died, she admitted something to the effect of "every decision I have made has been stupid, and I got my family killed". This made me warm up to her a little bit.
