Does politics really matter?

I see so many posters on this site act as if the current leaders are the worst in the history of the world and revel in voting against them in the next election.
Why?
No one on the site gets a real say in what goes on unless they are elected. Given that one vote is nearly meaningless statistically, and that regardless of your vote the leaders can mostly do what they want. Very little choice exists in our system at all.
Politics is overall a giant waste of time and energy except the occasional keeping up with the news.

Yes
Because it doesn't matter if you're R or D, you want things banned the other guy does and have an irrational hate for them.
So, it matters for entertainment purposes. It's just a team sport.

Ah, you have reminded me of my favorite quote from antiquity.
"Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn’t mean politics won’t take an interest in you"….Pericles 430 BC

this ...
politics should matter ... the fact that a majority of americans are more interested in american idol or the pros/cons of their qbs (coker has the most upside, sims can't pass, and bateman doesn't have a grasp of the offense)doesn't negate the fact that politics WILL take an interest in us ... and the results of that interest are entirely dependent on our interest in politics ...
nice quote ...

Cool Pericles quote.
Here is why he is wrong.
We in the USA have unaccountable 'leaders' in the gov't elected or not who benefit wildly from lying and cheating the system. Even the most pure Cincinnatus who takes the job will eventually wilt.
Even if you vote for one of these 'leaders' you don't really get a choice, as the ballot is very limited and nothing makes the politicos do what they say they will do.
When I see politics I just see people fighting to the death over the controls of the gov't, I'd rather just destroy the gov't than have all this drama and conflict over which party signs the welfare checks or distributes stolen 'benefits' from productive society members.
Either way, the gov't as an institution is rotten to the core and no amount of 'voting' will ever change that.
