We do have plenty of Yellowhammers here in Alabama, and FYI they're really called Yellow Shafted Flickers. You're right about the Civil War connection, and when the Confederate Veterans in Alabama attended reunions, they wore a yellowhammer feather in their caps or lapels...

Alabama made the Yellowhammer its official bird in 1927, and is the only state to have a woodpecker as it's state bird.
