I don't own one myself but if I'm not mistaken it's easy to view live with the GoPro smartphone app. The new GoPros broadcast a wifi signal that you connect your phone to, just like any other hotspot. Then you have full control of the camera without hitting any buttons. We played with one camping and it was a breeze using the app to start/stop recording.
ETA: I think only the newest models have this ability.

That is cool. The app seems like the way to go. Battery life is disappointing though.
My boss just told me his friend puts his Gopro on a drone and flys it over land. He can survey land very quickly with this method.
