Sounds like a bad cord.
Make sure its an Apple Iphone 5 cord, not a knock off. The update to the newest iOS made it so the phone can detect whether or not the cord is official. If it isn't from Apple then it will almost never work. Also, I've come to find that putting just the cable into a different usb transformer to outlet other than the provided one from Apple will burn your cables out rather quickly.

It is an official Apple one. Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions. I will try a different cord tomorrow.
