How is he going to be used? His FR year at UF, he played mostly at SAM LB, and was actually all over the field. When UF moved him to WDE his SO yr, you could see he wasn't as explosive off the ball and really struggled with his hands and fighting off blocks. I know last yr he had slimmed up quite a bit, and was a little more explosive, but from watching him play so much I feel like his natural "fit" is at LB where he can move in space.

Anyways, good luck to you guys, and I look forward to watching him play for NO.

He's a bit small to play 3-4 DE at the pro level.

Actually not. Payton said he will be playing Sam with Haralson as a stand up LB.

He can blitz but he isn't a pass rusher like Galette.

I'm hoping he plays well enough to be able to take over for Haralson next season. Not that I dislike Haralson but he's 30 and on a 1 year deal. I'd still like to add him back next year but we need a long term guy.

Same thing with Fortt taking over for Hawthorne next year(only Hawthorne can go bye bye next year).

And thanks OP. Hopefully he makes you and us both proud.

He was good in college but fell because of injury concerns. If's he is/gets and stays healthy he could be a steal.

From is post draft presser.

Payton:

quote:

Ronald Powell is the outside linebacker, Sam linebacker, we drafted from (the University of) Florida. We see him as a Sam playing outside.

quote:

Ronald) Powell was a guy who plays that outside linebacker position. He is pretty strong. He has heavy hands. We felt like he is a guy that has some versatility. We felt like his measurables were good. He plays outside linebacker. I would definitely see him playing that for us, that Sam position, not so much in a stack or off the ball but more on the line of scrimmage.
