My grandmother thought that she could keep armadillos out of her garden by putting a few mothballs around it, and I read somewhere that they hate the way ammonia smells.

I don't know how you could use the ammonia around your trees, but you might try putting some mothballs around them. I honestly have no idea whether either one of those things will work, though.

That is an old wives tale for snakes, not dillos.

Mothball's main ingredient is a chemical call napthalene, not ammonia.
