What's the best way to clean a propane smoker?

I bought a used propane smoker and want to clean it before my first smoke. Any tips on how to do this? I thought about cranking the heat up and burning off some of the gunk just like you would a grill. I also thought about using gojo and a wire brush. Am I way off track or does this sound about right?

How dirty? if not excessively, just turn the heat up.

Not caked on dirty but it does have a little buildup on the grates and the bottom. Not a whole lot on the sides or top.

Set a large fire inside the cooking chamber, close it, and the scale will ignite and burn to ash. Knock off any left over residue with a wire brush.

That's kind of what I was thinking about doing. Thanks for the advice.

I put my smoker and grill grates in the oven for a self-cleaning cycle.
All the gradeaux turns to ash. Smoker grates get a wipe-down, and the grill grates (cast iron) get re-seasoned.

Stainless steel wire brush from a hardware store after an application of oven cleaner allowing that to work for an hour.

This. But a large fire sounds a lot more fun!
