BYU quit the Mountain West conference. THEY CHOSE TO LEAVE, they weren't forced out.
Back to West Point though, they quit Conference USA because it was too difficult for them (at least that's what a West Pointer I deployed with tried to give as their excuse)

It was... they were good for an 0-12 or 1-11 year when they were in CUSA. This was back when CUSA had Louisville, Cincinnati, Southern Miss at its prime, TCU was getting going under Patterson, Tulane was still decent, East Carolina was a Top 25 team with David Garrard. Even UAB and Memphis were having their moments with Darrell Hackney at QB for UAB and DeAngelo Williams at RB for Memphis
