That dude gets some amazing power out of hitting off his front foot. His arse is huge, but he has some quick hands. He'll need to win minor league POY to get a shot in Seattle though. They're pissed at him. May be a trade in July.

This dropped an hour ago

quote:

Jesus Montero's stock is so far down compared to where it was a few years ago when the Mariners traded Michael Pineda for him, that he's become somewhat of an afterthought within the organization. But there's reason to believe the DH/1B could find a place in Seattle's lineup in the not-too-distant future, for two reasons.

For one, other than Corey Hart, the M's have had no luck finding a reliable designated hitter through the first month of the season. As a team, Seattle's DHs combined to bat just .193 in April with a .661 OPS, so the need is there, particularly if Hart can move to right field on a consistent basis. While using Hart as the every-day right fielder may not be realistic, he has started to move better of late after missing all of last season due to multiple knee operations, and played three games in right at the end of April.

Some of the credit must also go to Montero, who quietly put together a very nice month in Triple-A, smashing 7 home runs and posting an impressive .934 OPS in 80 at-bats with Tacoma. It's questionable whether Montero can continue the success against major league pitching, but for a M's team off to a disappointing 11-14 start and desperate for right-handed pop, promoting Montero could make a lot of sense.

There's also this: the 24-year-old is particularly locked in at the plate right now, with five home runs in his last eight games, including this one Wednesday night estimated by Sacramento's groundskeeper to travel 480 feet.

I reached out to ESPN Insider Jim Bowden for his take on Montero's future, and Bowden believes the young slugger still has a chance to be a good hitter in this league.

"Montero's future position is at DH and back-up 1B and 3rd catcher. He is losing weight and working hard. He should be able to eventually develop into a .280 hitter with power numbers in the 25 HR, 85 RBI range. He will eventually get another shot with the Mariners or another American League team will benefit from his change of scenery. The player has been humbled, has a great attitude and is looking for a second chance, which he will eventually get.

I hope that's correct. I picked him up as a place holder last night in another league.

I made a FB status about my experience. Hope to get some likes.

Only complaint was the guy who drove my truck around left his stench of grease and BO inside

Billy Hamilton just got removed from the game after making a spectacular diving catch off Gomez. Looks like he hurt his wrist.
