People havent changed, the means of exchanging goods has.

In 1900, there was no practical way for a poor person to regularly live above their means because they simply didnt have the assets to put down for such activities.

In 2014, we have ample means of paying for things we dont actually have money for.

It is very, very easy to live above your means today. That wasnt the case for most of history.

there was most certainly a way for poor people to live above their means. Moneylenders have existed for thousands of years, and poor people are great targets since they are low flight risks, often lack education (read math skills) and are much easier to bully than rich people.

I will totally agree, borrowing money is easier now though. And there are more ways to borrow.
