I grew up on the coast and the sunrise/sunset period you won't see me hanging out outside. I get welps or whatever from those things and it's miserable.

They live in the soil. If you're the worst kind of masochist, work in the garden. As much as pulling weeds sucks, the aggravation factor increases exponentially when gnats are nibbling on your arms, ears, ankles, and arse crack. Those bastards make a miserable experience even worse.
