Same neighborhoods we listed. Check zillow and craigslist. I have found great places using both.

Or you can call a local real estate agent to help, thats how I found my current spot.

The Burbs are nice and are cheap, but if you want to experience REAL Nashville for a year before purchasing a home, I'd suggest renting within the city.

Sylvan Park, East Nashville, Germantown, Greenhills, 12 South, etc. are all great areas in Nasville. Families would be perfect for Sylvan Park, some parts of East Nashville, Greenhills, and 12 South (Hillsboro village as well).

if you're going to have kids...best bet is to lock into williamson county now. best public schools in the country. BAR NONE

if you're planning to eventually go private school, look into bellevue. you can get the same house as williamson for about $50k less and your kids are fine until 5th grade at harpeth valley.

best thing about bellevue is its 19 minutes to downtown (on a good day) and maybe 25 minutes average with traffic on the rest.

it doesn't have anywhere near the traffic as other parts of town (north, east, south, southeast) and its right next to the natchez trace if you like to 'get away from it all' particularly if you like to cycle.
