I'm not saying that research is wrong, but there is a big difference in food production where factory food has been bred for visual appeal as much, or in many instances more so than taste appeal. I definitely notice a difference in the organic sweet potatoes at WF vs the local but conventional. The difference in flavor is probably due to the difference in variety and not the organic vs. conventional, but even if that is what the difference is, going organic is more likely to give you a variety that provides more flavor IME for items where we typically just shop the class rather than the specific variety like potatoes and tomatoes.
