Briefly - but he later became political enemies with the Klan faction - costing him at least one election.

Also, his record would contradict allegations of significant racism - he did not, for example, have to racially integrate the armed forces at the time - but he did, anyway. He was not Catholic himself (JFK being the first Catholic POTUS) - but his wealthy political supporters were (a source of his conflict with the Klan).
